Alternative Baseball Organization looking for coaches, players for start-up in Springfield

The State Journal-Register - 2/14/2021

Feb. 15—The Alternative Baseball Organization is looking coaches, players and volunteers for a prospective team in Springfield that would begin play later this spring.

ABO is an authentic baseball experience for players 15 years of age and older with autism and other developmental delays.

Taylor Duncan of Dallas, Ga., started the organization, he said, "to give others on the spectrum/special needs the opportunity to be accepted for who they are and to be encouraged to be the best they can be.

"The goal is to inspire and raise awareness and acceptance for autism and special needs globally through the sport of baseball."

The program follows Major League Baseball rules, including wood bats and base stealing. Teams play on traditional high school size fields and the organization provides equipment and other resources.

There are other ABO teams in the Midwest, including Detroit, Indianapolis, Evansville, Columbus, South Bend, Louisville, Jeffersonville, Ind., and Beloit/Janesville, Wis.
