Jefferson Grange to host softball tournament in support of Special Olympics

Reading Eagle - 9/23/2021

Sep. 23—Southern Schuylkill County's Jefferson Grange #1384 will host a charity softball tournament on Oct. 2 at Island Park in Schuylkill Haven. The event is to benefit Special Olympics of Schuylkill County.

The Grange learned this summer that Special Olympics is hoping to start a softball program in the near future, making it a perfect beneficiary for the coed, double-elimination event.

"We are proud to be a part of this community and find ways to help all of our neighbors," Grange President Rachel Brobst said, noting the idea came from Will Bildheiser, the chapter's personal development and family activities director.

Brobst said there are still spaces for teams to participate, and individuals interested can also contact the Grange to be part of the Friends and Family team.

"Sponsors have started stepping up, but we hope to see many more businesses and individuals give to support this wonderful cause, and of course, on the day-of, we hope many people come out to cheer on the teams, meet the Schuylkill Special Olympics athletes and enjoy great food by local vendors and concessions by the Grange and Special Olympics," Brobst said.

Greg Bott, development director for Special Olympics Greater Lehigh Valley Pocono Region, said the organization is pleased to have some of the athletes attend the event to participate as players, with concession sales and more.

Bidlheiser said he especially likes that the Grange finds ways to connect with all members of the community.

"One of my favorite things about the Grange is that it is a very inclusive organization," he said. "Parents and children are invited to participate together in all the programs and meetings, and we find ways to make sure we improve the lives of people in our community from all backgrounds."

Secretary Amanda Brozana Rios said the partnership has brought more awareness to issues faced by individuals in the community with special needs and disabilities and believes the Grange will take on some advocacy work to ensure greater inclusion and accommodations at local playgrounds and other public spaces.

"The Grange goes beyond the typical fundraisers and service model. It's an organization that promotes a higher local quality of life and advocates for that," she said. "It's a connector and champion for our community."

Teams and sponsors are sought for the tournament. More information along with team registration and sponsor forms can be found at jeffersongrange1384pa.org/softball.
