St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2022 announced Thursday

Jun. 17—The St. Joseph Sports Commission announced the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2022 on Thursday afternoon.

The class includes 10 individuals as well as a team inductee and a Special Olympics Area Athlete of the Year.

The 2022 Hall of Fame class includes: HL "Doc" Childress (World Renowned Sporting Clays Shooting), Janet Clark-Moody (MIAA Hall of Famer, Northwest Missouri State Women's Basketball), Vic Eaton (Lafayette High School football, Pittsburgh Steelers), Gary Filbert (MWSU men's basketball head coach), George Hayward (NFL Official), Michael Hill (MWSU and NFL running back), Gust Karras (Wrestling Promoter), Bill McKinney (Area sports innovator for City of St. Joseph), Tom Smith (MWSU men's basketball coach for 25 years), Dennis Snethen (Wesley Weightlifters, U.S. Olympic Coach)

This year's team inductee is Herzog Motorsports.

This year's Special Olympics Athlete of the Year is Tanner Hrenchir.

"To be recognized in your hometown this way is a really special honor," said inductee and former Missouri Western men's basketball head coach Tom Smith.

Smith and former U.S. Olympic weightlifting coach Dennis Snethen, who is also a Hall of Fame inductee, were in attendance for the press conference announcement Thursday afternoon.

"I'm shocked that my name came up, I'm glad, I'm grateful. Thank God for everything," said Snethen.

The enshrinement ceremony for the 2022 Hall of Fame Class will be held Sep. 18 at the Stoney Creek Inn & Conference Center in St. Joseph at 5 p.m. Tickets for the ceremony will go on sale in early July for $25 each according to a statement from the St. Joseph Sports Commission.
