DHS Special Olympics Unified Volleyball team sets out for state playoffs

Duncan Banner - 10/20/2023

Oct. 18—Teamwork, hard work and determination will bring a unified front when several athletes set out for state on Thursday.

In 2022, Duncan High School received recognition as a unified school and now its Special Olympics Unified Volleyball team is headed to compete at state level.

Special Education Department Head and Special Olympics Head Coach Toni Howard said the team leaves for state playoffs at noon on Thursday, Oct. 19.

"We will play in the semi-finals at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 20 at Tulsa Union," she said. "This is our teams first time to ever make it to the state games."

The team consists of Emma Harper, Malakai Vescio, Neveah Duran Cloud, Rai Anna Robinson, David Biddle, Cheyenne Luttrell, Bailee Howard, Callen Villagrana, Rilee Kreutz, Finley Davis, Breckyn Root and Charlie Heath.

"I am beyond incredibly proud of them," Howard said. "They worked really hard this season."

Howard noted the team has come really far since they began playing three years ago.

"We are going to miss our seniors so much and the leadership they have all brought," she said. "We are ready to see what state is like."
