Officials: Correction officers attacked at Mid-State in Marcy

MARCY -- Several officers were injured in two separate attacks by inmates at the medium-security correctional facility Mid-State last week, according to officials.

According to a news release:

The first attacked occurred Thursday, when an inmate was given orders to return to his dorm by an officer. The inmate became agitated and charged at the officer. He initially struck the officer in the chest. the officer defended himself, the inmate struck him again in the chest and face. As the attacked continued, another inmate came to the aid of the officer being attacked. He pulled the inmate off the officer and held him up against the wall until additional staff arrived and placed the inmate in mechanical restraints.

The officer sustained abrasions to his forearm, forehead, chest and neck. He was treated by medical staff at the facility and remained on duty.

The 42-year-old inmate is serving a three-year sentence after being convicted in New York County in 2019 for first-degree sex abuse.

He was placed in a Special Housing Unit after the attack and faces disciplinary measures.

On Saturday, an inmate attacked an officer after being ordered out of the day room of the facility dorm. The inmate became agitated at the officer and punched him in the stomach and right eye. Additional staff responded to the incident. During the struggle, one officer was kicked in the stomach and a second officer was bit on his pinky. Multiple OC spray was administered with no effect. More staff arrived and were able to get the inmate under control and into mechanical restraints.

Four officers who sustained injuries were treated by medical staff at the facility. They were treated for abrasions and swelling and remained on duty. A fifth officer, who had his finger bitten, was transported to an outside hospital. He sustained two small lacerations to his pinky and was treated and released.

The inmate, 27, was placed in a Special Housing Unit after the attack. He is serving a five-year sentence after being convicted of attempted first-degree robbery in Broome County in 2015.
