Man was wanted on domestic violence charge

Union-Recorder - 8/5/2020

Aug. 3--A man who recently shot his girlfriend to death before taking the gun and fatally shooting himself was wanted by local authorities on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, The Union-Recorder has learned.

The double-shooting was witnessed by one of the children of the slain woman, as well as an officer with the Milledgeville Police Department.

Neither the child or the police officer were injured.

The shooting took place July 22, in front of a residence where 33-year-old Tameka Justice lived with at least one of her children on West Mitchell Street in Milledgeville, according to local and state law enforcement authorities.

The shooter was identified as Randall Wilson, who also lived in Milledgeville.

"This is absolutely a tragedy what happened," said Baldwin County Solicitor General Skye Gess.

She confirmed to the newspaper that there was an open domestic violence case in her office involving Justice and Wilson.

"It was a pending case," Gess said in a telephone interview. "He had not yet been arrested. Our status was what is called an intake status for pending charges, meaning when an arrest warrant has been issued by the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office or by the Milledgeville Police Department, that we go ahead and open a case file pending their arrests. And that is what I had on flle."

Wilson was to be served with a warrant on a charge of simple battery under the Georgia Family Violence Act.

The incident in which Wilson reportedly was involved with Justice took place sometime back in March, according to the solicitor general, who prosecutes misdemeanor cases in Baldwin County State Court.

But before that could happen, he went to Justice's residence and talked with her inside before the conversation continued outside, subsequently shooting his girlfriend to death and then shooting himself with the same handgun.

The gunshot victims were treated on the scene by police officers who performed CPR until firefighters/first responders from Milledgeville Fire Rescue and personnel with Grady Emergency Medical Services arrived.

Justice and Wilson died a short time later in the emergency department of Navicent Health Baldwin hospital in Milledgeville.

"Any case that has a family violence component always leads us to have a heightened awareness because we know that these kinds of cases can turn very, very tragic," Gess said. "There was a pending arrest warrant for Mr. Wilson, where Ms. Justice was the victim in that case."

Gess said her office offered the victim resources and services.

"We did everything that we could to help Ms. Justice," Gess said. "I sincerely offer my heartfelt condolences to her family."

In all domestic violence cases, the key is to reach out to the victims in anyway possible.

"That's what I do, and that's what my staff does in every case," Gess said. "I want our community to know that we are always available 24-hours a day, seven days a week."
