Former school district doctor to spend 9.5-20 years in prison for sex assault: attorney general

Patriot-News - 11/12/2020

Former Lancaster County sports medicine specialist William Vollmar, who worked for years in Dauphin and Lancaster county school districts, pleaded no contest to sexual abuse charges on Thursday, according to the Attorney General’s office.

The charges include sexual assault, institutional sexual assault and indecent assault in connection with six former patients, according to the AG’s office.

“Over the course of our investigation, brave survivors came forward to report disturbing sexual assaults by the defendant in both high school facilities and in Vollmar’s home,” Attorney General Josh Shapiro said. “Vollmar will go to prison and spend the rest of his life as a registered sex offender, but for many survivors, reporting acts of abuse is incredibly difficult. My Office will continue to stand up for survivors of sexual assault and hold perpetrators accountable.”

While Vollmar, 57, was working as a doctor, he was a school physician in Dauphin and Lancaster counties, as well as Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. He was also a practicing physician at Diamantoni and Associates Family Practice from July 1992 until April 2019.

He also served as medical support staff for the PIAA during district and state athletic competitions and was a member of the PIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

Vollmar was sentenced to a period of nine and a half to 20 years in a state correctional institution, according to the AG’s office. In the plea agreement, Vollmar was ordered to register as a sex offender for his life and surrender his license to practice medicine.

In Pennsylvania, a no-contest plea means Vollmar did not admit to committing the acts he is accused of, but rather that he acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him. There is no difference between the two when it comes to sentencing.

According to the AG’s office, patients reported that during medical appointments at Vollmar’s practice, at his home and at school facilities, he would inappropriately touch them without their consent.

Vollmar would often require patients to have exams or “sports massage” during which he would assault the patients, the AG’s office said.

The patients accusing Vollmar include boys under the age of 18, as well as young adults. In one case, a patient said he was on the examination table when Vollmar began to perform a sex act on him.

In a criminal complaint on a charge of indecent assault, Vollmar reportedly admitted to the assault and said it was something he was “not very proud of in terms of inappropriate relationship between a physician and patient.”

Vollmar had contracts with Middletown Area School District, Lampeter-Strasburg School District, Pequea Valley School District, Lancaster Country Day School, Conestoga Valley School District, Octorara Area School District and Solanco School District.
