Worthington woman charged with assault

The Daily Globe - 1/28/2021

Jan. 27—WORTHINGTON — A Worthington woman is in police custody after being accused of assault.

Worthington police were dispatched to a local residence Saturday evening for a report of domestic abuse. Inside the apartment, officers observed a victim with a large amount of blood on their face and neck and down the front of their shirt. They also saw Laura Maldonado, 29, running water over a cut on her hand.

Maldonado and the victim were previously in a domestic relationship, but do not live together currently.

According to Maldonado, she had accidentally thrown a glass at the victim because the victim had threatened her and wouldn't let her leave the apartment. Other witnesses at the scene said Maldonado had smashed a wine glass over the victim's head and that the assault was unprovoked.

Both Maldonado and the victim were taken to Sanford Worthington Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The victim had a large laceration above the ear, and Maldonado was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Maldonado was arrested and charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm, both felonies; and misdemeanor domestic assault.

She remains in Nobles County Jail, with a bail hearing scheduled Tuesday morning after The Globe's print deadline.
