Newport Beach woman accused of domestic violence shot by police

Orange County Register - 7/19/2022

A 43-year-old Newport Beach woman suspected of domestic violence was shot and wounded by police during a confrontation in an apartment complex, authorities said.

Newport Beach police were called to the 1600 block of San Miguel Drive at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, police spokeswoman Heather Rangel said. Officers learned the woman ran across the street to the Baywood Apartment Homes, just east of San Joaquin Hills Road, before they arrived.

Police found the woman armed with a weapon, and at least one officer fired at her, Rangel said. The type of weapon the woman was holding was not specified.

The suspect was hit at least once and was taken to a hospital, but her injury was not life-threatening, Rangel said.

One officer, a 9-year veteran of the department, suffered minor injuries as a result of the confrontation, the spokeswoman said. The officer was placed on administrative leave, which is standard for police shootings.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting with assistance from Newport Beach police.

No details have been provided about the domestic violence allegation.
