Baltimore-area woman arrested for shooting her husband, alleges he molested children at her day care

Patriot-News - 7/25/2022

A Baltimore-area woman was arrested last week after police say she shot her husband before barricading herself in a room at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington D.C.

Police say they were called to the hotel Thursday after staff there reported that they saw blood when they went to check on things after a fire-alarm went off in the eighth-floor room. When police arrived, they say that Shanteari Weems, 50, stayed barricaded in the room for nearly an hour.

They said she told them she shot her husband, who The Baltimore Sun did not identify but said was a former Baltimore Police officer, because several children at the day care business she runs told her that her husband had molested them. The Sun said that police say the woman did report the allegations.

Her husband reportedly told police that he was shot in the head and leg before they forced their way into the hotel room. The man was taken to the hospital and his injuries were not life-threatening.

The Baltimore Sun reported that Sgt. Gladys Brown, a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Police told them that the woman’s day care — Lil Kidz Kastle — is closed while an investigation is underway.

“Baltimore County detectives are currently monitoring the recent developments in Washington D.C.,” Brown told The Sun. “Due to the sensitive circumstances leading up to this incident, the Baltimore County Police Department continues to support the families impacted.”
