Battery charges filed in Madison County

Jul. 29—EDWARDSVILLE — Battery charges in two separate incidents were among felony cases filed Thursday by the Madison County State's Attorney's Office.

Jason D. Holt, 42, of Collinsville, was charged July 28 with aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony; and domestic battery (second subsequent offense), a Class 4 felony.

The case was presented by the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

According to court documents, on July 27 Holt allegedly strangled a household or family member. He has a 2007 conviction for domestic battery out of Madison County. Bail was set at $75,000.

In an unrelated case, Ernest E. Ripley, 28, of Granite City, was charged with aggravated battery.

The case was presented by the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

According to court documents, on July 27 Ripley allegedly "chest bumped" a Madison County sheriff's deputy.

Bail was set at $50,000.

Other felony cases filed July 28 include:

—Robert T. Schnelten, 60, of Wood River, was charged with criminal trespass to a residence, a Class 4 felony, and criminal damage to property, a Class A misdemeanor. The case was presented by the Wood River Police Department. According to court documents, on July 5 Schnelten allegedly entered a Wood River residence knowing someone was present and used a "fire or explosive" to damage a shed on the property, causing less than $500 damage. Bail was set at $15,000.

—Kelsey S. Chandler, 30, of Jerseyville, was charged with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, a Class 4 felony. The case was presented by the Wood River Police Department. On March 2 Chandler allegedly was driving a 2006 Pontiac Torrent when she attempted to flee from a Wood River police officer, reaching speeds in excess of 21 miles above the posted speed limit. Bail was set at $15,000.

—Justin D. Bishop, 30, of O'Fallon, Illinois, was charged with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, a Class 4 felony. The case was presented by the Maryville Police Department. On July 23 Bishop allegedly was driving a 2008 Lexus LS 460 when he attempted to flee from a Maryville police officer, disobeying two or more traffic control devices. Bail was set at $15,000.

—James E. Brown, 42, of Cahokia Heights, was charged with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, a Class 4 felony. The case was presented by the Collinsville Police Department. On July 27 Brown was driving a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle and attempted to flee from a Collinsville police officer, reaching speeds in excess of 21 miles above the posted speed limit. Bail was set at $15,000.

—Dezmond L. Spruill, 21, of Alton, was charged June 22 and July 9 with two counts of aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, a Class 4 felony. Both cases were presented by the Alton Police Department and had been suppressed until July 28. According to court documents, on June 3 and July 10 Spruill allegedly was driving a Dodge Charger when he attempted to flee from Alton Police, in both cases reaching speeds in excess of 21 miles above the posted speed limits. Bail was set at $15,000 for the June 3 incident and $50,000 for the July 10 incident.

—In an amended information, Edmond J. Jirdon, 21, of Alton, was charged July 7 with aggravated unlawful use of weapons, a Class 4 felony. The was presented by the Alton Police Department and charges were sealed until July 28. According to court documents, on July 4 Jirdon allegedly had a Glock 19 9 mm handgun without a valid concealed carry permit. No bail amount was noted.
