Woman says she shot husband for molesting children, will ‘apologize when he apologizes’

Patriot-News - 3/11/2023

Shanteari Weems said she believed she and her husband “were both supposed to be on this crusade of saving children.”

But the owner of Lil Kidz Kastle Daycare Center in Owings Mill, Maryland has accused her husband, James of molesting three children they cared for. Actually, she did more than just accuse him, she snapped and shot him twice.

Weems is now coming forward to talk about her experience after being sentenced to four years in prison for aggravated assault and carrying a pistol without a license Feb. 3, according to the Department of Justice.

James Weems, her husband, did not die in the attack and is awaiting trial for 33 counts of rape and sex crimes.

“I will apologize when he apologizes to those children,” Weems said of her firing on 57-year-old James, a retired cop and her husband.

Shanteari Weems pleaded guilty to the charges Nov. 28, a mere four months after the incident.

Shanteari described the revelation as a massive betrayal, and filed for divorce in February, according to People.

“Child molestation is something that we had talked about all the time, how horrible it was,” she said according to WUSA9. “I snapped. I’m not a violent person… I just felt like my world had ended.”

Prosecutors say Weems had a drink, texted an associate “I’m going to kill him and then myself,” and then drove to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C. to do the deed July 21, 2022.

Despite prosecutors and the defense agreeing to a two-year sentence on the charges, Judge Michael O’Keefe blindsided Weems’ lawyer, Tony Garcia, by doubling it, WUSA9 said. He said Weems’ acted out of deliberate cruelty and that she set out to cause a “devastating” and “life-altering injury.”

When Weems leaves prison, she wants to start a nonprofit to fight child abuse, news outlets report.
