Domestic assault, sex offender charges dismissed in Joplin man's drug possession plea

Joplin Globe - 11/14/2023

Nov. 13—A 65-year-old sex offender pleaded guilty Monday to felony possession of a controlled substance in a plea deal dismissing felony counts of domestic assault and residing too close to the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Missouri in Joplin in violation of state law.

Michael J. Hill pleaded guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court to the drug charge in a deal allowing a suspended sentence and a seven-year suspended term with five years of supervised probation.

Hill had been charged in February 2021 with second-degree domestic assault, armed criminal action and violating the state's law prohibiting sex offenders from residing within 1,000 feet of a school or child care center and picked up the drug charge later the same year.

A probable-cause affidavit filed in the domestic assault case stated that he got into a violent argument with his ex-girlfriend when she went to retrieve her belongings from his residence. The document stated that he choked her, pulled her head down by her hair and menaced her with a handgun.
