DO IT YOURSELF ENTRY --- PURPOSE: To enable an individual with severe physical disabilities to operate a computer, dial a phone, turn pages, and perform other tasks. This device was constructed using a cut down bicycle helmet. An additional band of rubber was installed to provide comfort and achieve proper fit. The pointer is a firm quarter-inch rubber-tipped metal rod rigidly attached to the side of the helmet and angled so the pointer tip is central to the user's eyesight. The rod is necessarily heavy, so a counter weight is attached to the opposite side of the helmet for balance. Two Velcro straps hold the helmet in place under the chin. The outer strap has a ring hanging down at its end that can be hooked onto a knob on the user's wheelchair tray to assist in removing the helmet. By raising his head, the user is able to pull the Velcro connection apart and by leaning his head to the side he can drop the helmet onto the sofa or other soft surface. TITLE: The Head Stick.
