Lend A Hand: Quincy family needs help giving autistic toddler a safe space
The Patriot Ledger - 12/16/2019
WALT'S STORY
When Walt was 2 years old, his mother noticed that he wasn't developing the way his two older sister had. No matter how many time she called his name, Walt would never respond, often remaining transfixed on the toy or other object in front of him. When his mother reached out for help, Walt had no words, no way to communicate that he was hungry or tired or just wanted his favorite thing of all, his blankey. Often he would end up on the floor in tears, sometimes hurting himself, as his blankey sat just out of sight.
Walter's father was recently laid off and his mother is staying home to make sure Walt gets the help he needs, which includes autism spectrum diagnosis, early intervention services, music therapy and other programs offered by Aspire Health Alliance. Walt needs at-home equipment that would allow him to get the most of the 25 hours he know spends in various programs each week, but his parents can't afford it.
WHAT WALT NEEDS
Money from Lend a Hand would allow Walt's parents to buy equipment that would give him his own corner were the light isn't too bright, sounds are silenced and Walt can feel safe and calm.
