Concert event at The Gardens Mall supports bereaved families

Palm Beach Post - 1/3/2020

PALM BEACH GARDENS - A day-long concert event to support bereaved families raised more than $9,000 last month at The Gardens Mall.

The 9th Annual MusicThon held Dec. 21 featured more than 150 musicians, music students and their teachers from Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie Counties.

The event raised money to send South Florida children and families to a 2020 family bereavement camp offered through VITAS' Healthcare.

Entering its eighth year, Camp VITAS provides a fun, interactive and safe place for families and children to define and express their grief, said Thomas Dalton, a VITAS music therapist in Broward County and camp organizer.

Participants stay in cabins with other families on the Fort Lauderdale beach, and take part in traditional camp activities like canoeing, hiking, fishing and swimming.

The camp also includes music, art, drama and movement therapies. It can accommodate up to 40 children.

This year's camp will be held March 27-29 at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park Campground in Fort Lauderdale, and is open to South Florida families who have experienced the death of a loved one.

MusicThon participants raised funds for the camp by securing pledges from family members and friends. Donations also were accepted.

Musicians ranged in age from 5-17, and performed on guitar, violin and flute, and also sang.

VITAS, the nation's leading provider of end-of-life care, serves hospice patients and their families in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties.
