After-school services offered online to support children and families during COVID-19

Star-News - 10/21/2020

Oct. 21--WILMINGTON -- The Wilmington'sResidential Adolescent Achievement Place (WRAAP), as youth providers, know first-hand the impact COVID-19 is having in everyday households, schools, and communities particularly when it comes to young people. With an unstable economy and school disruptions and delays in day-to-day operations the need for quality after school services is in even greater demand.

Recently, the organization received a COVID-19 education grant from the City of Wilmington to provide free online after-school programming and help fill in gaps in services in the community. The education grant offers valuable learning opportunities and food support services during pandemic, particularly to children and families in underserved communities.

The after school Enrichment Academy Program is designed to help benefit students in grades three through eighth. Students who scored a level 1 and 11 on the state's assessment test are also eligible to receive academic support and social development instruction.

The After-School Enrichment Academy Program operates under the umbrella of the Wilmington'sResidential Adolescent Achievement Place, which promotes self-reliance and healthy lifestyles through education, mentoring, and advocacy.

The organization utilizes a student-centered approach to carry out a broad array of after school activities that advance student achievement and offers a variety of enrichment learning programs and remedial education activities that include a strong concentration on academic instruction, interactive learning sessions, and social development.

Goals of the after-school enrichment academy are to reduce the number of unsupervised youth afterschool, to improve the academic performance, attitudes, and behaviors of participants, and to meet physical, intellectual, and social needs of youths. In addition, food support care packages are provided to program participants.

The organization's strategy for online after-school programming remains to meet the academic and social behavioral needs of children and make a difference in the lives of at-risk children. The company's mission is to bridge the educational and social gaps that exist amongst youth, families, and communities.

The After School Enrichment Academy Program operates out of 1952 Dawson St. (Freedom's Way Ministries). If you want to enroll a child or learn more about WRAAP call Daryl Dockery at 910-392-6007 or visit nc-wraap.com.
