New program to provide in-home support to new, expecting families in Middlesex County

The Middletown Press - 9/22/2021

Sep. 21—NEW LONDON — The Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut is collaborating on a program for new and expecting families in partnership with Middlesex Health of Middletown and CT Community Doulas.

The project, Healthy Futures, will provide in-home support to new and expecting families, according to a press release.

Using the Parents as Teachers curriculum, Healthy Futures will create a proactive system of care for at-risk families, young parents, and communities of color that prioritizes healthy families and reduces child maltreatment, according to the nonprofit organization.

CFA has delivered the PAT program through its three family resource centers since 1997, serving 150 families annually. "Together, CFA and its collaborators are confident in our ability to deliver high-quality and highly effective home visiting services throughout Middlesex County," the news release said.

Annie Calamri, manager of the Middlesex Health Family Advocacy Program, said in a prepared statement that, based on the health agency's experience with other in-home parenting and support programs, "there are typically wait lists" and that the "benefit of early intervention has such a dramatic impact on families and children that can last a lifetime."

This collaboration signifies new opportunities for growing Middlesex County families to live full, healthy lives and set their children up for success, according to the CFA.
