Claremont woman is a L'Oreal Paris 2020 Women of Worth honoree

Inland Valley Daily Bulletin - 11/14/2020

Nov. 13--Diana Chao of Claremont was recently named one of 10 L'Oréal Paris 2020 Women of Worth honorees and awarded $10,000 for her work with mental illness.

Chao founded Letters to Strangers, which destigmatizes mental illness and increases access to affordable, quality mental health care through therapy-informed anonymous letter exchanges, science-driven peer education and grassroots policy-based advocacy, according to a news release.

After grappling with bipolar disorder and depression that led to suicide attempts, Chao committed to self-healing, which led her to writing, according to the news release. She founded Letters to Strangers when she was in high school.

The Women of Worth program honors women working for positive change in their communities and championing self-worth in others.

Chao and the other nine honorees will be featured in a television program airing 8 p.m.Nov. 25 on NBC. The program will highlight each honoree's work, from providing free health care for immigrant communities to education on the dangers of opioid abuse.

In addition to the $10,000 each honoree receives, one of the 10 will receive an additional $25,000 for her cause. People may vote through Nov. 27 to determine the national honoree, at www.WomenofWorth.com.

Information about the program, now in its 15th year, and about this year's honorees, is also available at www.WomenofWorth.com.

The national honoree will be announced Dec. 1.
