GREEN: A Bowling Green State University student is creating public good after playing a key role in helping plan and design a new mural at an area mental health center.

For nearly a year, Frances Griffith, a doctoral student studying clinicalcommunity psychology at BGSU, collaborated with Harbor Behavioral Healths Connection Center in Bowling Green to create a mural that would provide recovery, self-empowerment, self-expression and other benefits for its members. The center, located at 309 S. Main St., serves as an inclusive space for people experiencing mental illness to come together and focus on self-improvement.

Completing a placement as community advocate for the Connection Center, Griffith said members of the centers mural committee told her the artwork shows how theyre all connected and capable of doing big things and are an integral part of the community. Griffith also said the group mentioned that the project gave them confidence and healthy attitudes.

The ongoing COVID19 pandemic presented obstacles for members who were unable to see each other or loved ones over the past year. As a result, Griffith and committee members began the mural design online in summer 2020 while shelteringin-place for the pandemic. Members then came together as a committee once the center reopened to finish the design and paint the mural.

Committee members thank Bradley Scherzer for his help painting the mural, Walmart for a community grant that made the mural possible and Cathi Arcuri with Smiley Mail for supply donations.
