Lackawanna County Prison to offer reentry services to inmates with mental health, substance abuse disorders

Times-Tribune - 3/15/2023

Mar. 15—The Lackawanna County Prison will offer reentry services to inmates with mental health and substance abuse disorders.

Lackawanna County commissioners approved the services Wednesday that will help inmates often negatively impacted by issues of bias, stigma and lack of sensitivity and de-escalation training. Commissioner Debi Domenick was absent Wednesday from both the commissioners and prison board meetings.

Scranton-based Outreach Center for Community Resources will offer training and classes to the inmates through the end of the year. The program will cost about $60,000 and grant money will fund it.

In other business from both meetings:

—As Lackawanna College prepares to establish the Center for Technology Innovation at 401 Adams Ave., commissioners agreed to apply for a grant on the college's behalf. The college has committed the required matching funds of $1 million and will apply for a $1 million grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission.

—Volunteers held a voter registration drive in the jail. Scranton resident Bev DeBarros said 25 eligible inmates have registered to vote. She asked the prison board to provide copies of The Times-Tribune to inmates so they are better informed before they vote in May's primary election. Board members said they would look at subscription options.
