Family of Beach Boys legend battling dementia gives update on his health

Patriot-News - 5/23/2024

Brian Wilson’s daughters provided an update on the legendary songwriter’s health recently.

Carnie and Wendy Wilson, along with their dad, attended the premiere of the new Disney+ documentary about the Beach Boys on Tuesday at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and spoke about how their father has been doing since he has been placed in a conservatorship.

“He is doing great! He is doing great. Every day he is in physical therapy. I’m cooking for him, he’s spending a lot of time with his children now, his family,” Carnie said to Entertainment Tonight. “I’m so happy he’s here tonight.”

Brian Wilson attended the event in a wheelchair and was reunited with his former bandmates, including David Marks, Al Jardine, Blondie Chaplin, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston.

It was his first red carpet appearance since a judge officially placed Wilson into a conservatorship. Wilson and his family announced their intention to make that move back in February, after his wife, Melinda Ledbetter, died.

“He knows that he needs the help but we’re still able to get together and we’re going to see each other soon,” Love said recently. “It’s not so negative as it sounds. As long as he’s cared for properly. He’s seeing his children… he’s being well taken care of.”

“I think he’s doing really good under the circumstances that he’s going through right now,” Wendy said. “But, you know, he’s a survivor. That’s my dad. He’s very tough, a very strong person. So yeah, I’m glad that he’s coming tonight and I think that he’ll really enjoy it, actually.”

Carnie and Wendy are Brian’s two children from his first marriage to Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford, which ended in 1981. They are members of the pop group Wilson Phillips. Brian Wilson married Ledbetter in 1995, and the couple adopted Daria, Dakota, Delanie, Dash, and Dylan.

“The Beach Boys” documentary will start streaming on May 24.
