San Bernardino County Sun - 6/16/2024

Jun. 16—Bezerk Productions, a nonprofit organization based in Yucca Valley, will unveil a mental health coloring book, "See, See, See, More! Listen With Your Eyes," at a celebration 3-5 p.m.June 20 at Birdcage Comics Cafe,165 W. Hospitality Lane, Unit 17, San Bernardino.

The coloring book, a project sponsored by a California Arts Council/Creative Corps grant, was created by artists who are on the emotional behavioral spectrum. Those artists, Cathy Dye, Lilian Iskandar, Mia Jette, Erica Mosco, Jeff Pippin, Jeff Pope and Denise Smith, will be at the event to talk about their work, according to a news release.

At the event, free copies of the coloring book will be available.

Bezerk Productions, at 56300 29 Palms Highway in Yucca Valley, has been in business since 2001 and started with the original version of Cracked Eggs, an interdisciplinary troupe of people on the emotional behavioral spectrum, according to the news release.

In 2021, Bezerk began Cracked Eggs again with funds from the Mental Health Services Act (Innovation Division of the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health). Bezerk offers workshops twice a week to clubhouses and TAY (Transitional Age Youth) centers in the county.

A year ago, Bezerk Productions received a Creative Corps grant from the California Arts Council to fund the mental health coloring book. The completed book is the result of a yearlong grant-funded program held twice a week at the Birdcage Comics Cafe in San Bernardino, the project's community sponsor.

The program started in October with training for teachers as Linda Sibio, founder of Bezerk Productions, taught how to work with mentally challenged people by teaching visual art techniques from her class "The Insanity Principle." The teaching artists, in addition to Sibio, are Claudia Bucher, Georgeann Deen, Leslie Matamoros, Neil Doshi, Erica Mosco and Jeff Pippin.

Student workshops were held twice a week from Nov. 1 through March 1, and then 100 drawings from the 400 produced in the workshops were chosen for the coloring book.

The gala event will include performances by Erica Mosco and by Jeff Pippin and his band, followed by an award ceremony.
