Senior Life Network offering safe driving course for seniors

Enid News & Eagle - 2/11/2020

Feb. 11--ENID, Okla. -- Senior Life Network and AARP will offer a Smart Driver course, aimed at reducing risks for senior drivers, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Feb. 18 at the Integris Bass Pavilion-Conference Room, 401 S. 3rd.

The course will offer updates on changes in driving rules and strategies for driving safely longer, and those who complete the class may be able to reduce their car insurance premiums, according to a press release.

In 2017, there were almost 44 million licensed drivers aged 65 and older in the United States, up 63% from 1999, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That same year, 7,700 people aged 65 and older were killed in motor vehicle crashes, and more than 257,000 were treated in emergency departments for motor vehicle crash injuries, according to CDC data.

The AARP Smart Driver course aims to lower those numbers by giving senior drivers safety tips and updates on changes to driving rules.

"Everyone can benefit from a refresher course that helps them stay current with the rules of the road," said Kevin R. Hackett, local AARP Smart Driver volunteer instructor. "As the number of older drivers increase, it is critical that we optimize the driving experience for capable older adults by helping them become more confident, knowledgeable drivers to reduce social isolation issues and financial costs, while making the roads safer for all."

Research shows older drivers can benefit from additional training on such things as managing roundabouts, pavement markings, turn signal use and sign compliance, according to the press release. The course also covers safety strategies that reduce the likelihood of a crash as they learn about how aging, medication, alcohol, and other health related issues affect driving ability, and how to adjust driving accordingly to allow for these changes.

Sign up for the course by contacting Senior Life Network at (580) 234-6060. Cost of the course is $15 for AARP Members or $20 for non-AARP members. Lunch will not be served. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch or plan to eat close by. The course is open to the public.
