Fayetteville Observer - 7/16/2020

Jul. 16--More than 70 troops from Fort Bragg left for Texas on Wednesday to help medical workers deal with the COVID-19 outbreak there.

The soldiers from the 44th Medical Brigade's 16th Hospital Center went to McAllen, Texas, according to a statement released Thursday by the 18th Airborne Corps.

"The 16th Hospital Center's primary mission will be to provide Role 3 Critical Care as they aid the local hospitals in treating those individuals hospitalized as a result of COVID-19," the statement said.

Lt. Col. Colin Frament, commander of the center's 528th Field Hospital, said in the statement that his unit is ready to support civilian authorities in Texas.

"We are deploying to provide medical assistance to those hospitals in the McAllen, Texas, area as they increase their efforts to provide care to COVID-19 patients," he said.

The 16th Hospital Center has extensive experience providing medical support and humanitarian relief, according to the statement. The center's most recent relief efforts include humanitarian assistance during the Hurricane Marilyn Federal Disaster Relief Operation in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The unit also deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve.
