Coronavirus: Athens Theatre in DeLand to host Volusia County’s first live show in COVID-19 era

News-Journal - 8/2/2020

DELAND -- This is the moment they've been waiting for.

The lights will turn on, opening lines will break the silence and hearts will race because actors will no longer face rows of empty chairs, but seats full of people.

Well, not exactly full of people, but maybe full by social distancing standards.

The Athens Theatre in DeLand will soon host its first live show since the coronavirus pandemic began. "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised]" is onstage Aug. 12-23. It will be the first live production on a community theater's stage in both Volusia and Flagler counties.

Marketing and operations director for the Athens, Alexa Baldwin, along with the rest of the team, has long been planning the logistics for this "minimalist," coronavirus-safe show.
