Produce distributor recalls onions after salmonella outbreak

Morning Call - 8/8/2020

A salmonella outbreak, including two cases in Pennsylvania, has prompted a produce distributor to voluntarily recall onions sold in all 50 states.

Thompson International Inc. distributed red, yellow, white and sweet onions potentially contaminated with salmonella bacteria in cartons and mesh sacks weighing between three and 50 pounds.

They are sold under the brand names Thomson Premium, TLC Thomson International, Tender Loving Care, El Competitor, Hartley’s Best, Onions 52, Majestic, Imperial Fresh, Kroger, Utah Onions and Food Lion.

Consumers who have onions under the brand names distributed by Thompson International should immediately throw away the onions and disinfect surfaces they contacted. People should not eat food prepared with the onions. Consumers unsure whether their onions are from Thompson International should err on the side of caution and dispose of them, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

The FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control are investigating Salmonella infections that sickened nearly 400 people in 34 states that may be linked to the onions. Thompson International recalled the onions as a precaution, the FDA said.

The agencies have not identified a source of contamination or a contaminated shipment.

Salmonella is a bacteria that causes serious infections that are sometimes fatal in young, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. People infected with Salmonella experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare instances, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause more serious illness.
