Austin Public Health to provide 600 free flu shots Saturday

Austin American-Statesman - 11/5/2020

Austin Public Health is hosting a free drive-thru flu vaccination event at the Travis County Expo Center on Saturday.

The event will also serve as a drill for health authorities who are preparing for similar efforts once a vaccination for COVID-19 is ready, officials said.

The drive-thru event, which will fun from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, will make about 600 flu shots available for residents. The Expo Center is at the intersection of Carnival Drive and Decker Lane in East Austin.

Austin Public Health hosted a walk-up event in October that provided 200 vaccination shots.

Vaccination shots will be provided at no cost, but health officials said people who are uninsured will have priority at the Saturday event. Health authorities also asked that people schedule appointments through Austin Public Health's immunization phone line so authorities can provide vaccinations to those who are most in need.

The number for Austin Public Health's immunization phone line is 512-972-5520. The phone line is open 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Health authorities said staffing for the vaccine event will require COVID-19 testing locations managed by the city to close on Saturday. The testing locations will reopen on Monday, officials said.
