Boulder County reports one new death, new hospitalization record, 216 new cases; state reports five outbreaks

Daily Times-Call - 11/20/2020

Nov. 20--Boulder County reported one new death Thursday, 216 new coronavirus cases and, for the third day in a row, a record number of hospitalizations at 102 patients. The county also has five new outbreaks, according to state data.

Chana Goussetis, Boulder County Public Health spokesperson, said that the person who died Wednesday was in their 90s. They had been living in a long-term care facility. This marks the county's 112th death.

To date, Boulder County Public Health reported 9,362 cases. There have been 306 people hospitalized.

The county also reported that there have been 807.2 cases per 100,000 people in the last two weeks.

County adds five new outbreaks

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment showed five new outbreaks, after its weekly report was updated Wednesday afternoon. The outbreaks were recorded at Balfour Lavendar Farms, a Louisville care facility; the Intervention Community Corrections Services corrections facility in Boulder; Mesa Vista of Boulder, a care facility; and the Colorado Sleep Institute in Longmont.

The data also showed an outbreak on Wednesday at another care facility: Accel at Longmont, but county health officials confirmed it was detected Oct. 24. For an outbreak to be resolved there must be no new cases for at least 28 days.

Goussetis said the Boulder County Public Health Team reports that Accel is "well on the way to resolution."

Goussetis added that it appears that "there may have been a delay in the submission of the outbreak form to CDPHE until recently, so it may appear that this is a new outbreak."

Stephanie Ward, the director of Digital Marketing for Stonegate Senior Living, LLC, of which the Longmont facility is part, said that Accel at Longmont has "no active cases."

State data shows that at Accel at Longmont, 1960 S. Fordham St., three residents and five staff members have tested positive for the virus and one staff member is considered a probable case.

Ward released a statement Thursday saying that Accel had worked in coordination with state, local and federal agencies to create a COVID-19 Management Plan.

"Our program has been revised on an ongoing basis in response to the numerous changes in these agencies' directives and the unprecedented challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic," the statement read.

The outbreak at the Colorado Sleep Institute, 1630 Dry Creek Drive, was determined Nov. 13. Adam Wertz, co-founder of the Colorado Sleep Institute, said that 25 employees were tested and four positive tests were returned, including a husband and wife. State data shows three people tested positive. CDPHE data has been known to experience delays.

Wertz said the majority of the institute's employees work from home, but some clinical workers need to be in office. The Longmont facility had been screening its employees for the virus with questionnaires each morning before they come into work. He said employees who were flagged were immediately sent home and quarantined. Anyone in the office was also required to stay home and get a coronavirus test.

"Currently, the public health department has allowed us to bring people back to work, everything has been quarantined and we didn't have any additional outbreaks," Wertz said. "The members who tested positive are allowed to come back to work, per the health department, on Monday."

Wertz said employees are now screened two times a day, including before they arrive for work and before they leave for the day.

At Balfour Lavendar Farms, 1800 Plaza Drive, state data showed that the facility's outbreak was determined Tuesday. Balfour has had three residents and six staff members test positive. The facility did not respond to requests for comment before publication deadline.

Mesa Vista of Boulder, 2121 Mesa Drive, has had four residents and four staff members who have tested positive, according to state data. The facility's outbreak was determined Nov. 16, the data shows.

Mesa Vista representatives did not respond to a request for comment by publication deadline.

The outbreak at the corrections facility, 1770 21st St., which the state referred to as a halfway house, was determined Nov. 13. There have been three residents who have tested positive and three staff members who have tested positive, as well as seven residents who are probable, state data showed. The agency that oversees the facility could not be reached for comment by publication deadline.

The additional outbreaks brings the total number in Boulder County to 39 active outbreaks. There are 38 resolved outbreaks across the county, state data shows.

CU Boulder, BVSD, SVVSD

The University of Colorado Boulder reported on its online dashboard that the 22 cases Wednesday were diagnosed from 380 completed diagnostic tests. The campus also conducted 1,083 monitoring tests. There are 24 on-campus isolation spaces in use, data showed. That makes up about 4% of the university's isolation space. Since the start of the semester on Aug. 24, the university has reported 1,523 positive tests. In total, the campus has conducted 10,637 diagnostic tests and 58,933 monitoring tests.

Boulder Valley School District's coronavirus dashboard shows that there are 41 active cases, 10 probable cases and 11 symptomatic cases, pending testing.

The St. Vrain Valley School District reported on its online dashboard that that there were 100 active cases, 68 of which were students and 32 staff. The cumulative number of cases reported is 368, with 274 of those cases in students and 94 in staff.

Statewide, CDPHE reported 182,801 positive or probable cases to date. There have been 2,730 deaths among cases and of those, 2,350 deaths due to COVID-19. There have been 11,980 people hospitalized. Of Colorado's roughly 5.7 million population, 1,537,359 people have been tested.
