Small Business Saturday helping retailers rebound from 2020 sales slump

Daily Herald - 11/25/2020

Nov. 25--Small Business Saturday will be an opportunity for citizens to take advantage of unique holiday deals, while also supporting local retailers who have been affected by COVID-19.

Now in its 11th year, Small Business Saturday was created by American Express as a way for towns and shopping districts to host special sales and community events, and to encourage shoppers to "pay it forward" by supporting local.

For more information about Small Business Saturday, including resources for business owners, maps of participating businesses and other materials, visit www.ShopSmall.com.

The year 2020 had a significant impact on Maury County businesses, and many were uncertain of their survival. Some got creative and revamped their business model to abide by guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In some cases businesses adapted and were successful, but not without their own share of losses and employee layoffs.

Small Business Saturday is a chance for struggling businesses to "get a leg up," as they are often the most vulnerable in times of a potential shutdown.

The Columbia Arts Building (CAB), for example, will be hosting a two-day pop-up vintage vendor sale, which starts at 5 p.m. on Black Friday. The pop-up sale will kick into full gear from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Maury County Farmers Co-op, located at 975 Riverview Lane, will be hosting a special Christmas Open House starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, which will include sales on clothing, footwear, home décor and other items. Pictures with Santa will also be available from 9-11 a.m. and 2-5 p.m., with free pictures included with a purchase of $10 or more.

Vintage 615, located at 5075 Main St. in Spring Hill, will host pictures with Santa from 11-3 p.m. Social distancing will be observed by families using a drive-thru process to check in. Only three to four groups will stand in line at a time, with sanitizer available for use prior to entry.

When it's time to take a break from the weekend's shopping spree, Saturday will also be a chance to get outdoors and experience a few exciting events.

In Spring Hill, The Tennessee Children's Home will host the fourth annual Spring Hill Turkey Burn race. The event will feature a half-marathon and 5k race, with both races starting at 7:30 a.m. at Spring Hill High School, located at 1 Raider Lane.

Lawrenceburg will "light up" its downtown square with a special tree lighting, which will also include a visit from Santa, who will light this year's tree alongside Lawrenceburg Mayor Blake Lay at 5 p.m.

Gospel singer David Phelps and his wife, Lori, will be bringing back their popular Christmas Barn Bash concerts at their Culleoka home, located at 2659 Culleoka Highway, starting at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Seating will be limited at this year's shows to comply with local regulations. Other live music Saturday will include Matt Nicholls, who will perform at Puckett's in downtown Columbia starting at 7:30 p.m. Call 931-490-4550 to make reservations.

Justin Bowman will perform at Bad Idea Brewing, located in the CAB, starting at 7 p.m. Abe's BBQ Smokehouse will also be parked at Bad Idea starting at 4 p.m.

Escape The Band will also be hosting a dance party at The Boondox, 3543 Highway 431, starting at 8 p.m.
