Florida reports 11,543 new COVID cases, 210 deaths

The Florida Department of Health announced an additional 11,543 coronavirus cases Friday, bringing the statewide total to 1,763,873.

The FDOH also reported 210 new coronavirus deaths, bringing the state's death toll to 27,457. Another 456 coronavirus deaths were non-residents.

Florida is also leading the country in the number of cases of the more contagious COVID-19 variant known as B.1.1.7, first identified in England, which is spreading quickly through the state.

The latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday showed that Florida has 187 cases — outpacing the 33 other states that have detected the variant. California, with the second-highest number of cases, has 145. The country has a total of 611 cases.

Volusia County was reported to have its first case of the variant Jan. 28.

On Wednesday, 111,325 people received a COVID-19 vaccine in the state, bringing the total number of doses administered to 2,320,966, according to a report by FDOH. Of those, 478,236 are booster doses.

The state’s daily positivity rate, calculated by using the total number of people tested for the virus and the total number of people who have tested positive, was 5.8% on Thursday with 188,595 tests administered.

As of Friday, 73,970 Florida residents have been hospitalized with COVID-19.
