Florida's latest coronavirus-related fatalities send state death toll past 28,000 mark

The state reported that number of COVID-19 fatalities in Florida passed 28,000 on Saturday.

The Florida Department of Health reported 142 new coronavirus deaths among residents and an additional 459 fatalities among non-residents. That brings the statewide death toll to 28,058.

Eight additional deaths were reported in Volusia County. There were no additional fatalities in Flagler County reported.

The department announced an additional 7,486 coronavirus infections, bringing the statewide total to 1,771,359.

Florida leads the country in the number of cases of the more contagious COVID-19 variant known as B.1.1.7, first identified in England, which is spreading quickly throughout the state.

The latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday showed that Florida has 187 cases — outpacing the 33 other states that have detected the variant. California, with the second-highest number of cases, has 145. The nation has a total of 611 cases.

Volusia County was reported to have its first case of the variant Jan. 28.

On Thursday, 127,745 people received a COVID-19 vaccine in the state, bringing the total number of doses administered to 2,448,711, according to FDOH. Of those, 554,502 are booster doses.

The state’s daily positivity rate, calculated by using the total number of people tested for the virus and the total number of people who have tested positive, was 5.8% on Thursday with 188,595 tests administered.

As of Friday, 73,970 Florida residents have been hospitalized with COVID-19.
