Herkimer County: Eleven new COVID-19 cases reported by health officials

Feb. 16—There were 34 new positive COVID-19 tests but no deaths reported over the weekend by Herkimer County Public Health.

The department reported 23 cases Saturday and 11 Sunday, bringing the total to 5,269 since the local onset of the coronavirus pandemic in March with 150 active cases and 25 patients hospitalized. The death toll remains 88.

There have been 5,031 recoveries in Herkimer County, having passed 5,000 in Friday's report, and Public Health has reported 97,755 negative test results.

There are 208 people under mandatory quarantine in the county after 60 were released Saturday while 260 remain in precautionary quarantine with 30 released Sunday.

Herkimer County's first confirmed case of COVID-19 was announced March 12, with the second announced March 19. The county's first coronavirus death was announced March 26, an 85-year-old with underlying health conditions.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can range from mild to severe, and some people with the virus don't have any symptoms at all. The most common symptoms resemble the flu and include fever, tiredness and dry cough. Some people also develop aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. Some patients have reported experiencing a loss of taste or smell.
