8 Northland schools removed from Minnesota COVID-19 outbreak list

Eight Northland schools were removed from the Minnesota Department of Health's COVID-19 outbreak list Thursday.

A school building is placed on the list if it reports five or more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in students or staff who were in a building while infectious during a two-week reporting period. The building is removed after 28 days of no new positive tests.

These Northland schools were removed from the list Thursday:

Lowell Elementary School, in Duluth, added March 11.

Mesabi East High School, in Aurora, added March 18.

—

West Rapids Elementary School, in Grand Rapids, added March 25.

—

Cohasset Elementary School, in Cohasset, added March 25.

—

Virginia High School, added April 8.

—

East High School, in Duluth, added April 15.

—

King Elementary School, in Deer River, added April 22.

—

Piedmont Elementary School, in Duluth, added April 22.

These Northland schools still remain on the outbreak list as of Thursday:

Grand Rapids High School, added Oct. 8.

Robert J. Elkington Middle School, in Grand Rapids, added March 11.

Nashwauk-Keewatin High School, in Nashwauk, added April 29.

—

Laura MacArthur Elementary School, in Duluth, added April 29.

—

Deer River High School, in Deer River, added May 6.

—

East Grand Rapids Elementary School, in Grand Rapids, added May 13.

—

Bay View Elementary, in Duluth, added May 27.

As of Thursday, no new school buildings were added to the list and 78 were removed for a total of 161 buildings remaining on the list.

From June 6-12, there were 67 more positive cases in schools statewide, with 14 new cases among staff and 53 new cases among students. The state reported three staff members were hospitalized last week and one staff member died. Four students were hospitalized.

Vaccine numbers

Minnesota and Wisconsin health officials reported Thursday another 409 Northland teens got their first vaccine dose over the past week.

Statewide, 8,326 more 12- to 17-year-olds in Minnesota and 5,463 in Wisconsin were vaccinated over the past week.

The number of first doses administered to 12- to 17-year-olds in Northland counties as of Thursday are:

127 in Cook County.

756 in Itasca County.
