Sangamon County hits 47% fully vaccinated against COVID-19 despite slumping numbers

The State Journal-Register - 6/22/2021

Jun. 23—Sangamon County crossed the 47% mark Tuesday for people fully vaccinated against COVID-19, despite slumping daily numbers.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said that Sangamon County had fully vaccinated 47% of its population, adding up to 91,816 people receiving full protection against the virus. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows that 67.8% of the population age 18 and over had received at least one dose of the vaccine in the county, with 57% having been fully vaccinated.

IDPH also reported 191 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday with six new deaths. The case positivity rate jumped slightly for the first time since an early-spring bump in cases, moving up to 0.9%. The rate as a percentage of tests stayed at 0.6%.

Sangamon County reported one new case and no additional deaths. Menard County reported no new cases or deaths.

In terms of vaccinations, a slowdown continues into summer, with averages hitting lows not seen since the winter. IDPH reported 21,958 new vaccinations Tuesday, but the statewide average dropped to 34,765 per day, the lowest since January 26, back when the vaccination campaign statewide was still ramping up.

Overall, the state has provided 12,260,505 doses of the vaccine, with 5,965,150 people having been fully vaccinated — representing 46.82% of the population. Statewide, 6,955,803 people ages 18 and over have received at least one dose of the vaccine — representing 70.6% of the population, with 5,373,808 people in that group having been fully vaccinated — representing 54.5% of the population.

Illinois remains the only state in the Midwest to hit President Joe Biden's goal of having 70% of adults with one dose by July 4, with bordering states like Wisconsin (64.7%), Iowa (63.3%), Kentucky (60.5%), Indiana (54.9%) and Missouri (54.7%) falling short with just under two weeks to go.

Sangamon County reported 262 new vaccinations Tuesday, with the seven-day average dropping to 418 shots per day. In total, the county has provided 186,043 vaccinations since the campaign began in December.
