SWAN BROS. ISSUES RECALL: Listeria found in raw milk, heavy cream samples

Claremore Daily Progress - 10/12/2021

Oct. 12—Raw milk produced by Swan Bros. Dairy, Inc. of Claremore is the subject of a second statewide recall in four months, according to a media release from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

Anyone who has purchased or received raw milk products from Swan Bros. Dairy, Inc. is strongly urged to dispose of any remaining product. ODAFF Food Safety Division Director Scott Yates said having two recalls so close is not normal in the dairy industry.

"It is cause for concern and it is not common in this industry," Yates said.

The recall comes after routine testing and sampling detected Listeria — a bacteria that can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Product included in the recall include raw milk products that were sold in plastic half-gallons, gallons and pints directly from the Swan Bros. Dairy and include raw whole milk, raw 2% milk, raw skim milk and raw heavy cream sold in pints on or after Sept. 17

ODAFF is concerned that some product may be in consumers' possession. Consumers should not drink or eat these products and instead throw them away, according to the ODAFF media release.

Swan Bros. Dairy, Inc. declined to comment on the recall to the Claremore Progress.

Yates said Swan Bros. Dairy, Inc. will release a statement once its products are back in compliance with food safety rules, letting consumers the products are safe to consume.

"I don't know what the definitive date will be," Yates said. "It will be based on sampling and when they correct their noncompliance."
