Darwin’s raw, frozen cat food may be contaminated with salmonella, FDA says

Patriot-News - 8/5/2022

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning today that some lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products raw, frozen cat food tested positive for salmonella.

The FDA said it issued the warning because the food represents “a serious threat to human and animal health.”

The agency said the two foods have been “associated with cases of illness in three kittens in a single household.”

They are:

The food is sold online and manufactured by Arrow Reliance, the FDA said.

“The FDA collected and analyzed unopened samples of products from these two lots after receiving a report of illness in three kittens in a single household that had consumed the food and developed diarrhea. A stool sample from one of the kittens tested positive for Salmonella. A fourth kitten did not eat the food and did not become sick.”

The FDA said further testing revealed two different types of salmonella - one in the chicken and the other in the turkey.

The FDA said because the food is sold and stored frozen, there is concern that it may still be in pet owners’ freezers.

“The FDA recommended that Arrow Reliance Inc. voluntarily recall these products and notify the public, but the company has not done so,” the FDA said.

Salmonella can infect animals and humans.
