Coral Springs honoring veterans with banner program

South Florida Sun Sentinel - 10/6/2021

Continuing to honor veterans, the city of Coral Springs recently launched its inaugural Hometown Heroes Banner program.

The free program features indexing banners along University Drive, from Royal Palm Boulevard to Ramblewood Drive, featuring the faces of the city’s veterans and service members along with the branch of the military in which they served.

Every three months, the city will rotate the banners and gift them back to the service member or their family as a continued gesture of appreciation.

Coral Springs residents are encouraged to submit their military family members for recognition through the city’s online application portal. Applications are screened by city staff on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The one thing about the city of Coral Springs is we have such a strong veteran community,” said Lynne Martzall, the city’s director of communications and marketing. “We have multiple veterans groups, including the Coral Springs Veterans Coalition. We have a senior group at Park Summit — they have their own veterans coalition.

“We recognize veterans once a month at our city commission meetings,” Martzall said. “I kept thinking we’re such a patriotic community — we’re all about the service of our military heroes — why don’t we have them up on our indexing signs?”

The first set of banners, which will be highlighted in recognition of Veterans Day, feature city staff members who are serving or served in the military.

Applicants may upload a digital photo with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher of the individual in their military or professional uniform, proof of residency and verification of active-duty status or honorable discharge.

In addition to the Hometown Heroes Banner program, the city honors military service members with its Veteran Recognition program monthly at city commission meetings. The city also hosts annual ceremonies on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
